The New York Times Online has a huge Sunday Spread on the pollution issues China is facing associated with it's unprecedented industrial expansion in the last 20 years.  Many of the topics are exactly those that readers of this blog have been aware of for some time.  The summary, and opening lines of the article are as follows"

The level of such particulates is measured in micrograms per cubic meter of air. The European Union stipulates that any reading above 40 micrograms is unsafe. The United States allows 50. In 2006, Beijing’s average PM 10 level was 141, according to the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics.
